Sebastian Munoz wrote his name in the history books on Friday after surging to the top of the LIV Golf Indianapolis leaderboard with a remarkable 59 at Chatham Hills

LIV Golf star Sebastian Munoz made history on Friday, becoming the first player in the known history of the sport to shoot a sub-60 round that included a double bogey.

The Colombian produced the performance of his life at Chatham Hills to race into the lead at LIV Golf Indianapolis  the high-stakes finale of the individual season. Munoz leads at 12-under-par after a scintillating round of 59, three shots clear of two-time major champion Dustin Johnson.

Munoz’s achievement was made all the more impressive by the fact that he made a double-bogey six at his fourth hole of the day, the par-four fifth, dropping him to one-over-par for the tournament. The 32-year-old stole the show at an event where the potential relegation of numerous Ryder Cup legends has dominated the narrative.

According to LIV Golf’s media team, Munoz’s remarkable performance is the only round of 59 or better in the record books that includes a double bogey.

“Awesome, awesome day,” he said. “Feeling right now a bit tired. It was a lot of mental strength out there. I felt like I started decent. A couple pars, a birdie and then a couple bad shots in a row, ended up making double.

“Kind of forgave myself, honestly. I didn’t want to hold on and have a grudge all day, so I kind of forgave myself and ended up chipping in for birdie on six and birdieing seven and eight and nine and 10, 11, 12, 13. It was really nice.

“I parred 14, and I just kind of got back on the bus and finished with five straight. Something I’ve never done. I’ve done eight birdies in a row. I tied my personal record.

“But 13 out of 14, it’s insane. I’ve never sniffed that. Really proud of the way I handled the day, the start of the day, and how I just kind of sorted through.”

It was just the third sub-60 round in LIV Golf’s four seasons. Bryson DeChambeau recorded the first, firing a 12-under-par 58 at LIV Golf Greenbrier in 2023.

Joaquin Niemann, who is on course to win the individual championship on Sunday, shot a 59 at LIV Golf Mayakoba last year.

Scoring was particularly strong in Indy, with 23 players scoring four-under-par better in Friday’s opening round. Munoz admitted that conditions were favorable, but he is sure fans have relished the experience so far.

“It’s been great. It was great to see a lot of fans out there today. It’s great for the city of Indianapolis to show up when we come,” Munoz added.

“I felt like they enjoyed it. There’s a lot of birdies out there. It’s a little easier track than what we usually play, but you’ve still got to make the putts, you’ve still got to hit the shots.

“It was a good show for the city of Indianapolis today, and hope that I can keep playing good and having a lot cooler moments in the next couple days.”
